Windows NT Server 4.0 是继 Windows NT Server 3.51 之后又一个服务器版本，是最后一个支持 MIPS、 Alpha 和 PowerPC 架构的 Windows Server 操作系统。
该版本可以直接升级到 Windows Server 2003。 1998年，微软发布了 Windows NT Server 4.0 的子版本 Windows NT Terminal Server 4.0。
因为 Windows NT 4.0 系统系列的种种错误，微软为 Windows NT 4.0 系统系列预备了7个 Service Pack ，而最后一个因为某种原因被砍，因此只出到了 Service Pack 6a 。这也是 Windows 全版本中 Service Pack 补丁包最多的版本。
